Wood, subbase frequencies and human bodies
We wanted to create a wooden platform whereas the visitors’ body is invited to embrace the abstract forms. These forms are made in an optimal way to let the sound materialize itself in a tangible experience of “feeling” sound.
While usually inattentive to the complex network of physical
resonances in its environment, bodies are sensitized through the materiality of larger sound waves. How can interactions with materializing sub-bass, and subwoofers offer new possibilities in creating and experiencing our
reality?
We believe through the concept of synesthesia (the experience of using one sense through the other; in this case sound through touch), we aim to heighten our sensorial awareness. Exploring new methods of increasing mental well-being in spatial design.
Sub-bass Is a low-frequency sound bath that explores the relaxing potential, contained in sound waves and subwoofers on the nervous system of the body. Throughout organized sub-bass frequencies spoke by subwoofers, Stefanie Egedy and Josephine de Fijter explore how this particular frequency-range communicates with multiple types of bodies – not only human bodies, but also structural aspects of the space where the installation is presented, informing correlations between sound and constructional features (dimensions, materials, walls, columns, and the floor).
Each “sculpture” has been researched on its ability to position the body in such a way to open up meridian pathways within the body (Chinese medicine). Focusing on specific tension and blockages to be released through the experience of sound. The impact sound has on our bodily awareness is being triggered. Often without conscious awareness, bodies
cultivate automation of perception.
